Understanding The Difference Between Coach And Coachee When Creating Online Courses
As an online coach you must understand the difference between coach and coachee. Have you got the coaching mindset?
Hi Trish Davies here, online and offline coach, founder and creator of TrishDavies International.com & Build Your AU. Coaching people online and offline can be one of the most rewarding experiences. To have an impact on people’s lives is exciting, satisfying and humbling all at the same time.
At some point you, like I, have been a coachee. Right from your early years, adolescence through to your adult years you have been coached in some shape or form.
Now it is time to turn the tables, so you are sitting on the side as a coach yourself. To do that you must understand the difference between coach and coachee. That transition can be seamless as you already know through your own experiences what coachee’s are looking for.
You have that advantage which you can leverage to enable you to give students the best experience. You must always have that in mind because now you are the one to deliver the desired outcome the coachee is searching for.
My objective for today is to look at the difference between coach and coachee first. Then I will invite you to make that transition to becoming a coach with my Build Your AU 9 step program.
Difference Between Coach And Coachee
What Is A Coach?
It doesn’t matter if you coach within business, academia or practical skills this is what you are responsible for. To plan, organise and then deliver a range of theory and practical activities that your students can gain relevant skills, tactics and techniques.
Your objective must be to improve the performance, mental capacity and focus within your students. It is all about the “here and now” and not what has gone on in the past or even the future.
As a coach you must focus on unlicking an individuals potential and maximising that potential to the fullest. You are responsible for guiding them in the direction they want to follow. It is not necessarily about teaching, more guidance.
What Is A Coachee?
A coachee must be committed to being coach in the first place otherwise the exercise is pointless. Also, a coachee must be engaged in the process. A coachee will have a desired outcome that they want to achieve. Therefore, they must also commit to and own what ultimate changes that result from the process.
A coachee must have an open mind to change. That includes changing habits, indifferent behaviour, developing new skills and trying new things. A coachee is looking for a transformation from where they are now to where they want to be. Only committed action will facilitate that transition.
Roles Of A Coach
I hope you have clarity on the difference between coach and coachee in the context as positioning yourself as a coach. To summarise the roles of a coach I have created a list of simple bullet points that will help you in your role as a coach.
- Enhancing knowledge or skills
- Usually, one-on-one nut can be in a group environment
- Usually, unstructured
- Informal, conversational
- Depends on asking
- Development focused
Now there are just a few roles I see a coach undertaking in the execution of their roles. This is just scratching the surface, there are many other roles.
