Perfectionism And Procrastination Can Be A Destructive Combination So Discover How To Overcome Both And Move Forward
An article from Trish Davies which looks at how perfectionism and procrastination can be a destructive and stop businesses growing.
I hate to shatter any dreams you may have but if you are looking for perfection it doesn’t exist. It is a matter of opinion as to what is right and what is wrong. Your business may be stalling because of perfectionism and procrastination which are very closely linked.
You may be in a position of wanting to turn a fantastic idea into reality so what is stopping you? There is a saying “attention to detail” which is to achieve thoroughness and accuracy in accomplishing a task.
Whatever you do in your business you should be as thorough and accurate as possible. What you must understand is that’s not perfection because everything in life at some point can be improved.
So, striving to be perfect leads to procrastination which essentially means always putting things off. The fear of not being perfect breeds lack of confidence which can ultimately lead to failure. People are afraid to fail at something but look at it in this way.
If you try something and it doesn’t work out as you wanted, you have still achieved something! You have worked out how not to do something. The only way you fail is not learning from it!
Perfectionism And Procrastination – A Toxic Formula
Imagine perfectionism and procrastination swirling around in a witch’s cauldron. The witch is merrily stirring away and ever so often adds some ingredients. First anxiety goes into the pot, closely followed by fear, lack of focus, confusion and finally peer pressure. Everything comes to a boil and the poisonous formula is complete.
As a business owner you will feel anxious because it is a human reaction. Everything is running through you head of the possible pitfalls that my lay ahead. You may be laying everything you own on this venture, so you are frightened of losing it.
With your mind scrambled you lose your focus and things start to go all over the place. So, you become confused as to what you are trying to achieve. Finally, you start to worry about what other people may think. You don’t want to be seen as a “failure” in other people’s eyes.
This then leads onto another saying of “getting all your ducks in a row”. Meaning you keep putting things of until you are convinced that everything is right and “perfect” before you take action.
Days run into weeks, weeks run into months, months run into years and so on. Perfectionism and procrastination have won, and your ideas are still on the drawing board gathering dust.
So, What Is The Answer?
The best solution is to take action. Whether it is developing your product and service, building your website or creating your first advertisement. Maybe it is getting over the fear of shooting a video, making a phone call or writing a blog post.
You must get something out there otherwise your business will never get of the ground. Develop a mindset that everything you do is a work in progress. When you think like this you will become far more creative and productive. The reason is that your mind opens up to endless possibilities and you develop the ability to adapt.
Your focus will become much clearer and you will also be open to change direction. When you become a doer and not a thinker you will see what works and what doesn’t. Instead of sitting at your desk with all the “what if’s” and “maybes” floating around in your head you must turn thoughts into actions. This is what will create the magic, not second guessing yourself.
Collaborate With Others To Reach Your True Potential
When you mix with other like-minded people a series of things will happen and take place. The first thing you will discover is that other people have been in the same position as you are now. Things have held them back, but they found ways to overcome them to move forward.
They all have a story to tell but they all have common elements to that story. The processes they have gone through to get their businesses up and running. Mindset shifts they had to make so their businesses didn’t stagnate. Also, how they use their own story to connect with their audiences and how imperfections resonate more.
We all have imperfections, and, in many respects, this is what people take notice of because they realise you are a real person. Too many times you see businesses have seemingly perfect scripts but lack the personal touch.
It doesn’t matter if you “um” and “ah” during a video instead of shooting the video 100 times, so it is “perfect”. The most important thing is that you deliver value.
The perfect example of collaboration with others is my Build Your AU Mastermind. It is a live weekly mastermind group that I host where we share our stories. I, and the group, will help discover your unique talents and gifts. Then we develop a plan on how to use your story to connect with your audience.
You will come to realise that you don’t have to be perfect. You just need to be real and authentic. Added to the mix is that you will be taking real action as there is no place for procrastination in our mastermind.
You will begin to see positive results in your business and your ideas will become alive.
