If The Thought Of Public Speaking Scares You, Here Are Some Guidelines On How To Deliver A Good Presentation
Trish Davies is an experienced public speaker and this article will show you how to deliver a good presentation.
So, you have landed on this webpage because you want to know how to deliver a good presentation! Public speaking comes in many different forms, but this is a common denominator that tends to get in the way.
That is the fear of getting up on stage or in front of a camera and delivering the message you want to your audience. This is what’s commonly referred to as “fight or flight” but what does that really mean? It is a natural reaction that causes an acute stress response in the body.
Us humans are complex creatures but, in this context, we feel that we are under attack from a harmful event. So, we have two options and the first is to fight it and conquer our fear of, in this case, public speaking. This is what I am going to concentrate on within this post so make sure you keep reading to the end.
The other option the “flight” part of the equation which means we get as far away from the problem as possible. Some people may also refer to it as a person’s comfort zone. We create this kind of bubble where we live our lives within a safe and secure environment.
If events occur that may take us away from that comfort zone, then the body reacts, and we put up the barriers. By doing this we retreat to the comfort of our inner sanctum, but the result is we carry on as we are. There are times in life though that if we really want to do something new, we must cross that line, the boundary of our zone!
I have been public speaking for several years now, but it was a challenge to be front of camera or up live on stage. I knew that I had to cross that line and bite the bullet so to speak. Over the last few years I have spoken live on stage to hundreds of people at any one time. This has been achieved by practice and more practice.
The more times I do it the better I become and now I have complete confidence in myself. That is why I am passionate about this subject and my mission is to help you get to that position.
Before I share with you the best practices on how to deliver a good presentation, I just want to look at some presentation examples. The reason is that your business may require all of these formats of maybe just one. So, I feel I must give you some options and how to become assured doing them.
How To Deliver A Good Presentation – PowerPoint Presentation
PowerPoint is a very popular format for people to deliver their message to their audience. It is super easy to set up as whether you have a Mac or PC there will be a program for you to use.
Also, this is a great option to practice public speaking because you are in a safe environment such as your home office. It is a great way to practice your voice because you can keep recording it until you get it right.
There are software applications that you can use to record your presentation which enables you to edit it before publication. PowerPoint is very flexible and can be used to create high impact video training courses or corporate presentations. You will develop your confidence to enable you to get in front of the camera.
Live Video Recordings
If you are going to do video, then getting in front of the camera will have the most impact on your audience. Your audience will see you are a real person through your personality and your story. You will instantly get your audience engaged and you can use live video in many ways.
Such as educational and training. What better way to teach someone how to do something than showing them live on camera? You instantly build up your authority and authenticity which brings in the know, like and trust factor.
How To Deliver A Good Presentation – Live On Stage
The natural progression is to give live presentations face to face. This could be a small intimate training room with a dozen or so attendees. Or it could involve hiring hotel conference suites before moving onto large seminars at exhibition centers.
These could be your own or you are a guest speaker along with many others, but you are presenting to hundreds, if not thousands of people. I feel very fortunate to have done all the above and I continue to do this on a regular basis.
So, there are some examples of different formats of presentations that you could give. Let’s now look on some guidelines on how to deliver a good presentation.
How To Deliver A Good Presentation – Ensuring You Make The Biggest Impact On Your Audience
Even if you are a complete beginner or a seasoned pro at the end of the day you are human. So, nerves will kick in but one of the best ways to counteract them is to control your breathing.
Take deep breathes right from the bottom of your lungs just before you are about to deliver. It will not only calm the nerves, but it will give you plenty of steam, so you don’t stop mid flow. There is a very simple formula to follow which is think, breathe, speak!
Your movement will influence your presentation. Sometimes you see presenters all over the stage with high energy. Th is great to watch but you need plenty of experience to pull it off. I suggest you control your movement especially if on stage. You need to connect with different areas of the audience but do it in a controlled manner, so you do run out of breath.
Practice Makes Perfect
Practice, practice and practice some more. You will have your own style of delivery which needs to be practiced to become streamlined. Try standing in front of a mirror because what you see is what others will see. If you have some industry influencers you follow study how they deliver their presentation and take elements of that to make your own.
Whether it is live video recording or onstage you must engage with your audience, so eye contact is key. It creates an instant connection between you and your audience. Also, a simple “Good morning, good evening or hello” can start the ball rolling.
Make sure that you have structure to your presentation so you must be organised. Your audience is giving up their valuable time so make sure what you deliver is valuable.
Incorporate Your Story
You have a back story so tell it to your audience. This will lay context to your presentation and will reinforce your authority and authenticity. Whether you are speaking to one person or thousands of people certain elements of your story will hit home.
To make an even bigger impact make sure that when you have made certain points you allow your audience to digest what you have said. You do this by simply pausing as silence when used correctly is very powerful.
Then when you have finished a simple “thank you for your time” goes a long way to creating a relationship with your audience.
