What You Need For A DIY YouTube Studio

You don’t need a Hollywood production set up to create a successful YouTube channel. Here is what you need to create your own DIY YouTube studio.

Hi Trish Davies, here form TrishDaviesInternational.com & BuildYourAU.com. Today I want to talk about one YouTube and how you can use it for your business. Video marketing is a real passion of mine both on the organic and paid sides to YouTube.

I encourage all my Build Your AU members to leverage YouTube to create an audience for their business. It is in my opinion the best marketing strategy to connect with your audience and form a relationship with them.

2 Ways to Use YouTube For Business

You can use YouTube in 2 ways for marketing your business. The first is through organic marketing which means creating high value videos that create awareness and engagement. This is how you build your audience.

What you must do is provide value in all the videos that you post on your YouTube channel. Tips, strategies and content that engages, inspires and entertains your audience. Your objective is to build up your subscriber list as quickly as possible.

These are real people who subscribe and hit the notification bell to receive your regular updates. They are also the data base that you can focus on to market your products and services. There is a saying in the online marketing world that “the money is in the list” and that applies to YouTube.

The other way to use YouTube for marketing your business is through their paid marketing platform. Now that is not something I will cover today but it is relative to creating a DIY YouTube studio.

This is my main focus today, but I wanted to briefly cover the principles behind using YouTube for business. I want to share with you what you need to become a success business owner on YouTube from the comfort of your home.

Make sure you keep reading right until the end as I will share some updates on my YouTube set up in my home office.

Now you don’t need a Hollywood studio to create great video content for YouTube. However, you do need some tools of the trade which do the job but at the same time doesn’t break the bank.

Also, space in your home helps as you can keep things set up all the time. However, if that is not an option what I will share with you is portable. This means that it is quick and easy to roll out, set up and then press that record button. So, what do you need?

Start With A Camera

Obviously you need something to record with so let’s look at some camera options. Most people have a smartphone of some description and the modern day versions have great cameras. This is all you need to get started with your DIY YouTube studio.

If you can push the boat out a bit then maybe look to get a DSLR which can be picked up for a few hundred dollars. If you already have one then go with this as you have more flexibility because you can use different lenses for different effects.

In all probability your desktop or laptop has an inbuilt webcam. The trouble with these though is that they are not that great in quality. If you are going to use your computer then I recommend an external HD webcam which you can pick up for under $100.

Stability Using A Tripod

Tripods give you that stability and you can get ones that fit a DSLR or your smartphone. They are inexpensive, compact and easy to put up if space is of an issue. You can even get mini tripods that sit nicely on your desk.

A Good Microphone

Picture quality is very important, but audio quality is even more important. You want people to hear what you have to say clearly and without distortion. As with a computer webcam the microphone installed in a computer is not that great quality. Therefore, the recommendation is to get an external microphone.

Either a free standing microphone which is attached to your computer or a lapel microphone. Both offer enhanced audio quality which is what you need to be effective on YouTube.

Lighting Your YouTube Video

Along with high resolution picture and sound quality you must have great lighting. If you have lots of natural light coming into your space then you may not need any additional lighting. Saying that though you may be recording when the sun has set so it is always good to have additional lighting when you need it.

You can get inexpensive studio lighting kits. You probably have seen the photography soft boxes on stands, well that is what you need. Really it depends on the space you are using as to what you need but you need a well lit space.

Fortunately, my home office is a great space and has lots of natural light which I will show you later in my video.

Audio Software

You are going to need some form of audio software for your YouTube videos. A great cost effective option is Audacity.

Video Editing Software

You will need to edit your videos before you upload them to YouTube. You may want intros & outros and add cards at the end. I use iMovie when editing my videos but there are many different options on the market.

Background Options

Try not to get too hung up on this. You can like I do use my office as the background and maybe change the aspect from time to time. Alternatively, you can use a green screen and then drop different images into the background using your editing software.

Outside is always a great option and I regularly shoot videos on the move. Maybe a nice lake, beach or mountains to set the scene. The whole point about video is that it is creative so really you are not limited to what you use.

Right, now for the updates on my DIY YouTube studio a promised.
