Employee Mindset vs Entrepreneur Mindset – What’s The Difference?

What are the differences between an employee mindset vs entrepreneur mindset? Trish Davies shares her insights on how to think as a business owner, not an employee.

Hi Trish Davies, here TrishDaviesInternational.com and BuildYourAU.com. Today, I want to talk to you about an employee mindset vs entrepreneur mindset and how to make that transition.

It’s something that’s quite critical when it comes to making that decision to build your own business. Also, it’s definitely something that has to happen as a as a key component or a key part of starting and creating a business.

You must develop a mindset that is definitely not one of a nine to five but one that makes you more independent. A mindset that allows you to think a little more creatively and to do things a little differently to become an entrepreneur.

You are literally taking something from nothing to create something. My business all those years ago, Buying USA Real Estate was something that I took from nothing. I had a vision once I saw there was an opportunity there.

I realized that I could take that opportunity to present and provide value to so many other people. People that were looking for opportunities that could provide them the returns that they wanted on particular investments.

By doing that you are adding so much value to them, but also creating something and adding so much value to yourself. Becoming a pioneer. Actually, the more extreme you can get, the more value that you can provide. The more value you end up providing the more money it’s worth as well.

Employee Mindset vs Entrepreneur Mindset

Providing value, pioneering, creating something from scratch, creating something from new. These are all the things that an entrepreneur will do. It helps you to make that shift from employee to entrepreneur mindset.

I think the other key ingredient, the key component is creating that vision, having that vision and taking action. The vision for me all those years ago happened out of adversity and out of those challenges that I faced as a single mom.

It was all of the challenges that came with that that made me decide that I was going to build that financial wall around my family. My family, being myself and my daughter. Building a financial wall around my family that nothing or no one could get through.

It’s been my driving force ever since. That vision was actually much bigger than just the product or service itself that I was going to provide. However, what it does do is it pulls you forward, it just keeps pulling you forward in the direction that you want to go.

There are so many times that you just want to give up. Many times, you think this is just way too hard because business building is a challenge. Business building is extremely challenging at times. With that extreme challenge, though, comes extreme reward.

Amazing rewards and that ability to be there for my daughter then and even now that she’s 25 years of age. I’ve always been there for her. I have had that flexibility to do what I like has been the major advantage of building that business.

Entrepreneurs Become Comfortable Feeling Uncomfortable

risk and reward

Another key attribute in moving from that employee to entrepreneur would be to get comfortable with being uncomfortable. That ability to take risk, a calculated risk. Stepping into that space of unknown and just knowing that the universe has your back.

As long as you trust the vision you trust the journey. You trust that all the paths can be put into place for you. Then you will step into that risk and you will be comfortable in getting uncomfortable.

So many times, over the years of me building a business, have I got uncomfortable? It’s usually being uncomfortable in situations with other people. Whether it be to present my opportunity in front of an audience. Or whether it be to buy something, invest in something that is a little bit outside of my budget or outside of my limitation.

All of those risks I’ve taken and it’s about getting used to thinking, “ok, this is feeling uncomfortable”. Thinking “I’m a little excited about it, this could be a good thing”. So, the entrepreneur mindset is definitely having a vision, getting comfortable with the uncomfortable.

Then you must make sure you are continuously learning. Making sure that you find the people, the mentors, the people that inspire you to keep moving forward. To create that space for you to learn and fail as well. There are moments that I have failed and there are transactions that I failed in.

It’s having the ability to brush yourself off and to keep moving forward. Therefore, make sure you continuously learn, accept failure and move forward with that failure. OMG you learn from those failures, you really do.

Entrepreneurs Understand It’s A Numbers Game

Also, you must your numbers for your business. Knowing what works, knowing what margins you have to make. Therefore, if it’s marketing, if you’re creating something like I’m creating here, which is an online business, just know your numbers.

You must invest for marketing, but at the same time know what returns you have to make. If that marketing is breaking evens then but make sure you are building a list or you’re building contacts or connections as a result of marketing.

Having knowledge that you’re going to get the sales revenue in to cover that marketing budget. It is so very important to know those numbers.

Entrepreneurs Have Passion For What They Do

Another thing is to love what you do, you must love what you do. You must have some passion around that, and the passion will drive you forward and will keep you going. So, love what you do, have the passion around it.

Having a combination of all these things will allow you to get past that traditional nine to five grind. They will enable you to get out of that business or profession that you’re doing.

You must be comfortable with that because a business is a 24/7 venture. I know that my hours extend till late at night and to the early hours of the morning. However, I can spend time like I am here right now. Sitting at about three o’clock in the afternoon here in Australia just spending sitting here by the lake with this beautiful weather.

The sun is shining, and I’ve got time to sit down here and reflect on all those things that I’m grateful for.
