How To Transition From Employee To Entrepreneur Mindset

People become trapped in their jobs because they have an employee mindset. To escape they must transition from an employee to entrepreneur mindset.

Hi Trish Davies, here from TrishDaviesInternational.com to talk about transitioning from an employee to entrepreneur mindset. Now I assume that because you have landed on this page you are looking for that transformation in your life?

Successful entrepreneurs are visible everywhere. You can see them in every conceivable industry and niche. Entrepreneurs can become wealthy from a simple idea which goes onto to generate millions in revenue.

Obviously there must be demand in the marketplace for products and services otherwise what’s the point? That’s not the point for this post today though, the point is how entrepreneurs think. It’s all about those 6 inches between your ears, that is the critical factor in this equation.

What you must understand is that successful entrepreneurs are no different to you. They enter this earth with the same opportunities as you have. They have the same blank sheet of paper to write their legacy on!

The thing that is separating you from them is how you think compared to how they think. You have an employee mindset, and they have the entrepreneur mindset. So how do you make that transition?

How To Transition From Employee To Entrepreneur Mindset

You Must Become Responsible For All Decisions

When you are an employee you are told what to do by people who are higher than you. Therefore, if what you are told to do isn’t right it’s not your fault. This means that to become a successful entrepreneur you must have the ability to create something from nothing.

That requires you to make big decisions on what you need to do and when you need to make them. Time is of the essence in the majority of cases because if you stall then you could miss opportunities.

Once you have made decisions you must own them regardless of the outcome.

You Must Have Short- & Long-Term Vision

Every successful entrepreneur has a vision of what they want to create, you must have vision as well. Therefore, you must be forward thinking and visualising how you want things to pan out. Always taking into account what obstacles and pitfalls you are likely to experience along the way.

Really you must be looking at where you want to be in 12 months, 5 years and 10 years’ time!

You Must Get Comfortable Feeling Uncomfortable

Now I know that sounds a strange thing to say but the emphasis is on comfort. In particular your comfort zone which is the area that you feel safe the majority of your time.

This can be summed up very easily. As an employee you are used to thinking inside of the box. Entrepreneurs think outside of the box or on many occasions do not recognise there is a box there!

Like them you must take risks, explore new territories, test new ideas and ultimately face any fears you have.

You Must Be Prepared To Continuously Learn

never stop learning

As an employee you learn the skills to do your job, that’s it and where the learning stops. Entrepreneurs are like sponges as they constantly absorb as much valuable information as they can.

This means learning completely different skills and keeping those skills updated at all times. Business evolves on a day-to-day basis so that learning mindset evolves on a day-to-day basis.

Also, over time you will learn to outsource many of the tasks your business needs. You will learn that being a jack of all trades and master of none is not the way to move forward. Learning those leadership skills is vital for your success.

You Must Understand Your Numbers

Unless you are an employee in accounts then numbers don’t really mean anything to you. Part of transitioning from an employee to entrepreneur mindset is that you must be fully aware of what the numbers mean.

You are in business to make profit, that is what pays the bills and puts food on your table. Therefore, you must understand the running costs for your business, what are your margins, what are your margins.

You must understand cash flow and how it affects your business. This one skill set will determine whether you stay in business or not.

You Must Love Your Business At The Same Time As Being Objective

Unfortunately, there are many employees who dislike or even hate doing their job. As an entrepreneur you must love what you are doing and be passionate about it. There is one caveat though to that which is this.

Entrepreneurship means that you will be working long hours, especially at the start. Therefore, you must not fall into the trap of what an employee does. That is working in your business just for the sake of it.

What you must always think is that you are working on your business in a role of steering it forward.

You Mustn’t Accept The Status Quo

try something new

Ass an employee you are told what to do, there are rules and regulations that you must follow. If you don’t then you run the risk of being fired. Now it is different for entrepreneurs because they are always trying to come up with new ways to do stuff.

This is their innovative and creative streak which is always looking to do things better and more efficiently. They are up with the latest trends, the latest technology and never afraid of experimenting. This is how you must transition your mind to think.

You Must Stop Looking At The Clock

An employee usually is under a contract to work a certain number of hours per week. Invariably this means clocking in and clocking out on time, even to the second! That’s what they get paid for so that is all the time they are prepared to give.

Entrepreneurs are different because they recognise that they will be thinking about their business 24/7. You will do the same and you will be working long hours and not the traditional 9-5.

You Must Start Transitioning From An Employee To Entrepreneur Mindset Now

Now this doesn’t mean quitting your job, I would never advocate that if you don’t have a plan in place. The thing is to start getting that plan in place now while you are still working.

If you have an idea for a business then start it up now while still working your regular job. This will help you develop the mindset skills I have shared with you while having the safety net of your paycheque coming in.
