How To Control Negative Emotions – Negative Emotions Examples

Negative emotions can be very destructive, especially in tough times where things can get out of hand. Here’s how to control negative emotions.

Hi Trish Davies, here from TrishDaviesInternational.com. If you hate doing your end of year accounts as much as I do then read on to learn how to control negative emotions. Also, I’m going to share some examples of those negative emotions that come up.

The Joy Of Doing Your Accounts

I’ve got two separate end of year accounts to do. One for my USA business and another for my business based here in Australia. So, at the end of each year I am literally pulling my hair out.  I have a 30th of June year end and I also have a 31st of December year end.

It hit as I was going through that it was quite repetitive, what I was doing. You know that bookkeeping process is very, very repetitive. What you tend to do is you start to overthink things.

I was wondering why I was starting to spiral into sort of this negative mindset or this negative place. After about three or four hours of doing it, I’d realized that as I was actually going through my transactions. Going through my Visa card statements and going through bank transactions.

It was actually starting to bring up like memories of maybe a year ago of what I was doing. What was happening and what was going on. It was bringing up memories of what I am currently missing out on because I’ve actually made a huge move.

My Big Move

I’ve moved from New South Wales which is two states away from Tasmania. I think this has been the first time that I’ve actually reflected on the possible things that I could actually be missing out on, even though I’m loving life right now.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m loving the move & I’m loving Tasmania. I’m loving what it’s provided me and what it’s given me. Things are very different to the life I was leading in New South Wales.

The thing is though there are certain things that I am missing out on as a result of not being there and. A big thing, a big part of that is my daughter as she is based on the mainland as well. So, you go from looking at these transactions, reminiscing about where I was then. Reminiscing about and what I was doing and all of those circumstances, it was with my daughter.

Negative Emotions Start To Take Control

Then you start to spiral out of control with those emotions. You go into these sort of deeper, dark and negative places. I thought, oh, my God, I must stop what I’m doing and just do something else to sort of shift this pattern.

It’s amazing how once those negative thoughts are planted things can get out of control. How they can gather and collect more negative thoughts and it tends to spiral out of control. They get bigger and bigger; therefore, momentum grows.

Before you know it, you’re sort of in this really melancholy sort of negative space. The trouble is you don’t even know why you’re there.

Everything became clear on reflection today. That by going through those transactions you’re actually sort of riding this roller coaster ride of emotions. Possibly where you were back then, or it could be what you are actually missing out on today.

A combination of all of that then creates this negative mindset. So, I went online and  searched for negative emotions. Here are some examples

Negative Emotion Examples

  • Fear
  • Anger
  • Sadness
  • Rage
  • Loneliness
  • Melancholy
  • Annoyance
  • Blame
  • Regret
  • Grief
  • Frustration
  • Disgust

I reckon in a morning of sitting there doing my accounts, I have actually gone through that array of those emotions. These negative emotions have come about just reminiscing memories, just going through transactions. Where my business was, where it could have been, where it could be today.

It’s crazy what the mind does. It really does play with you and play with your emotions. At then end of the day it’s really just thoughts. That’s all they are. It’s not reality, it’s not what’s going on here right now. It’s just the past.

Doing these accounts is like a trigger that takes you back in time to what was going on and where you’re at. So just a roller coaster of emotions.

You Must Take Time Out

What I do is think of strategies for overcoming that and getting away from that. The first thing is to just break it down into chunks.

So, I’ve been doing these accounts over a couple of days now and not spending the whole day doing it. At first I was on a bit of a mission thinking, oh, I’m just going to work from morning till night to get it done.

The thing is that’s a nice place to be from morning till night. So, chunking it down to maybe four to five hours, is what I’ve done over the last two days.  Stopping and then going for a walk. Yesterday I did that, and I felt so much better.

Meditation is a great release valve for negative emotions. I meditate every morning anyway, but I also break out in the day and just do a quick 10-to-15-minute meditation. That interrupts that negativity and stops it gathering momentum and potentially getting bigger and bigger.

Meditation and exercise are the two biggest things that I do to break that pattern. To stop negative emotions from spiralling and getting out of control.

How To Lighten The Mood

Another thing I did as whilst I was doing the accounts was put on some really upbeat, cool, modern music. I had it on in the background to give some light distraction but also give me an upbeat vibe.

That lifts your spirit and not just be in your headspace. It makes it really mechanical, transactional, and helps not hook or attach your emotion to those transactions. That’s where the mistake can happen.

That’s my share but I’ve got to get through these accounts, get them done and get them finished, I think maybe, most probably it would be better to outsource this whole process.

My background is an accountant, I am a corporate accountant. Because of that I tend to do those sort of things in a house because I’m a bit reluctant to hand that over to anyone else. I think outsourcing could be another brilliant strategy to help you to overcome this negativity, that it does spiral, that it does create.
